LMS 2026–2027: Back-to-School Expectations & Important Reminders
Dear LMS Families,
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, every student plays a powerful role in shaping Leonia Middle School’s culture and reputation. Words and actions matter—they directly impact how safe, respected, and connected each of us feels in our community.
At LMS, we are grounded in our core values—Respect, Integrity, Community, Perseverance, and Responsibility—and committed to building a school where kindness and inclusivity guide how students interact with each other and with staff. These expectations will be emphasized throughout the year, and we ask for your partnership in reinforcing them at home.
Here’s how you can help right away:
Talk with your child about kindness and respect: Remind them there is never a reason to make fun of or disrespect others—whether for height, weight, ability, appearance, skin tone, race, identity, religion, sexual orientation, or personal interests.
Encourage inclusion: Urge them to welcome others into conversations, groups, and activities.
Remind them regularly that teasing is harmful: School should be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to reach their greatest potential.
Important Reminders for a Successful Year:
Cell Phone Policy (Off. Away. All Day.): All Internet-abled devices such as cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, and earbuds must be turned off and stored in lockers (Grades 6–8) or cubbies (Grade 5) from homeroom until dismissal. Smart glasses are prohibited and should not be brought to school. Please review this information with your child, as violations result in progressive consequences.
Attendance & Punctuality: Regular attendance is key to academic success. If your child will be absent, please report it through the Genesis Parent Portal by 8:30 AM. Note that arriving late to class without a pass will lead to teacher- and subsequently administrator-assigned detentions.
Behavioral Resources: To familiarize yourself with our approach to student conduct—including Code of Conduct violations and investigation procedures—please review the LMS Student Handbook.
Academic Support: We encourage you to check Genesis regularly for academic progress and Google Classroom for daily assignments with your child to ensure satisfactory progress throughout each marking period. Teachers are also available to support students for extra help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
Late Bus: A 3:45 PM late bus is provided for students who reside in Edgewater who are staying after school for a school-related activity. Reasons students may remain on campus after dismissal include participation in an after-school club or activity, participation in one of our athletic teams, serving detention, or staying after school with a teacher for extra help. Students who remain after school for an approved reason will receive a late bus pass, which gives them permission to ride the late bus. Students who do not have an approved reason for staying after school or who violate this expectation will be required to have a parent/guardian pick them up from school.
Asking for Help & Reporting Concerns: We remind students that “See Something, Say Something” means going to an adult—such as a teacher, counselor, or administrator—when something unsafe or hurtful is happening. When students do this, school faculty/staff can step in and help make it right. Whether dealing with academics, peer conflicts, or personal concerns, no student is expected to handle difficult situations alone.
